The Man of Sorrows

Exterior, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, Austria

This sculpture at the top of a pilaster removes from the Man of Sorrows image type everything but the waist-up figure of the wounded and sorrowful Jesus, naked but for the crown of thorns.

A Man of Sorrows image functions as an aid to pious meditation rather than a piece of narrative, but in this case it is placed amid a number of narrative pieces. The fresco behind it pictures the Assumption, and a set of reliefs to the right depicts the Crucifixion, Entombment, and Resurrection.
